Book Review: The Murder of Roger Ackroyd

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (Hercule Poirot, #4)The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I've read quite a few of Agatha Christie's novels and I've liked them all. This one caught me by surprise, though, as I typically like the Ms. Marple series better than the Poirot series. Poirot is sometimes a bit obnoxious for my tastes, while Ms. Marple is funny. What I liked about this book is that it reminded me of how I would write a mystery - that is, it is a bit atypical. The narrator is very amusing and makes the story very engaging. This is not a spoiler review, so I won't go into details of the book. Suffice to say, I appreciated the twist at the end, which was refreshing. I recommend for all mystery lovers, and a must read for Agatha Christie fans.

The One Minute Writing Challenge: Day 3

Today's writing prompt is: How old are you now?

I woke up and didn't know anything. Who am I? Where am I? I can't even tell my age. I'm older than a child, that's for sure. But am I a fully mature adult? It's so hard to tell these days, with the way kids are growing. But I feel like an adult.

One minute is really a short amount of time. Maybe I'm over-thinking this thing. Maybe I just can't type as fast as I can write by hand. Maybe this is just a hard exercise for me.

The One-Minute Writer Challenge: Day One

I've been following the blog "The One-Minute Writer" but haven't really ever tried their writing challenge. Why, you ask? Well, I've never been too fond of writing exercises, especially those that require "free-writing" or spontaneous writing. I'm a spontaneous person, but not when it comes to writing. I like to over-think things and make them more complicated than they need to be. But that's probably why such an exercise would be good for me, to get me out of my comfort zone and force some unexpected creativity into my writing. So, today I've given myself a challenge: complete seven days of The One-Minute Writer challenges.

Here's today's challenge: Good and Bad

People are generally neither good or bad. I mean, there's a lot of good in people, and a lot of bad. How can you really expect someone to be angelic, or completely demonic. When you look down deep inside, there's always something to contradict your previous beliefs, and to surprise you. Hopefully.

Hmmm...that sure wasn't a long time. But there's my challenge for today!

Book Review: Knit Green

Knit Green: 20 Projects and Ideas for SustainabilityKnit Green: 20 Projects and Ideas for Sustainability by Joanne Seiff
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This was a great introduction to the world of sustainable yarn craft. I've seen projects online before utilizing recycled or reusable materials (old fabric cut into strips, unraveled sweaters, etc) but I didn't know a whole lot about the manufacturing process that goes into making yarn, or the practices farms make around the world. It gave me a lot to think about, and will make me pause the next time I go shopping for anything. It's crazy that, just like corn, manufacturers have pretty much kept to harvesting one type of cotton in this country - a type that requires a lot of pesticides and fertilizers to maintain - purely for the looks of it. It's a wonder more people aren't allergic to cotton these days!
